From the dark tale, "The Anguish of...the Spectre," this scene features the very first time that Lieutenant James Corrigan meets the lovely Gwendolyn Sterling (who would later become his fiancé), as he questions her about the recent murder of her father. She expresses a romantic interest in Corrigan, but the hard-boiled police detective declines cryptically by answering, "I'm not really free to get involved with a woman, Gwen, as much as I might like to be." In the pivotal fourth panel, Corrigan utilizes his uncanny power as the Spectre to transform into the ghostly image of Adrian Sterling to confront and accuse his former business partner Maxwell Flood of first degree murder. Spectre artwork from his brief, yet remarkable run in Adventure Comics is very rare and highly sought after among seasoned collectors. This unforgettable series firmly established the Astral Avenger as the top Bad-Ass in the entire DC Universe, a supernatural superhero totally unrivaled in power and Divine authority, granted unto him by the Almighty Himself, as he acted as Judge, Jury and Executioner upon evildoers. Writer Michael Fleisher's storylines were darkly grim, gritty and gruesome, while artist Jim Aparo's illustrations were simply breathtaking.
